On our fourth day, we decided to take a tour from Barcelona to Montserrat. We booked this experience through GetYourGuide for around €50, and it was well worth it! We left from the tour office in Barcelona on an air-conditioned coach and enjoyed a comfortable one-hour drive on the highway toward Montserrat. Once there, we boarded the cogwheel train up the mountain, taking in the breathtaking views along the way. Montserrat’s unique landscape, with its serrated rock formations, gets its name from the Catalan words Mont (mountain) and Serrat (serrated). This stunning scenery, known worldwide for its dramatic geography, was declared a National Park in 1987 to preserve its natural and cultural heritage. It was an unforgettable experience!.

At Montserrat, we followed our local guide through the monastery, home to 80 monks who follow the rule of Saint Benedict. The basilica and sanctuary, with their stunning Gothic and Renaissance details, were truly captivating. Our guide shared the legend of La Moreneta (The Black Madonna), said to have miraculously appeared in the cave of Santa Cova. Due to a varnish reaction, the woodcarving has darkened over time, adding to its mystique. We visited the Church of the Monastery to see this revered figure, a moment filled with history and spirituality.
