Shibuya is one of the most famous must-see places in Tokyo. Famous for having the busiest crosswalk in the world, it is a young neighborhood where there is always a lot of atmosphere, and where you will find the craziest situations in the city.

As you may be a little jet lagged, it is the perfect excuse to get up early and see first hand the unique fresh fish sales that take place in this gigantic market. Take the opportunity to have fresh fish for breakfast at the many stalls next to the market, and soak up the Japanese culinary culture through the 5 senses with ingredients you have never seen before, with which you will come across during your walk.

Strolling among its skyscrapers is quite a contrast to the atmosphere in the market. Here you will find stores of the best brands, with beautiful shop windows in which you will feel as if you were in a museum.

Cradle of Japanese otaku, it is quite an adventure to stroll among the street food stalls, stores and restaurants, while you come across characters that seem to be in costume. Prepare your wallet, because here you will find the best second-hand stores and 100 yen stores where you can buy your first souvenirs of your trip. One of my favorites is the kawaii store at Kiddy Land, very close to the Chicago thrift store where there is always a beautiful collection of vintage silk kimonos at super cheap prices.

Entering Yoyogi Park and Meiji Temple is like immersing yourself in a bubble of tranquility, and a must-see.

A short walk from Takeshita Street takes you to one of the quietest oases in the Japanese capital, right in the centre of the city.

One of our favourites is the Tokyo Tower observation deck, although there are many others that you can climb for cheap, or even free entry. Another option to see Tokyo from above is to take a helicopter ride. If you book in advance, it is possible to find very good prices.

Next to the famous Tokyo Central Station is the Imperial Palace, which although you are not allowed to visit it from the inside, is well worth a visit from the outside for its beautiful gardens. Take a walk through the Tokyo Station area, touring the city through its many subway passageways where one of the largest shopping areas in Japan is located.

From the central station we headed to the Shinjuku neighborhood at sunset, to see the nightlife of one of the favorite areas of young Japanese and tourists. Filled with neon lights everywhere, here you will find a variety of shopping malls and giant stores that close late in the evening. También encontrarás infinidad de restaurantes, cafeterías y pubs con todo tipo de platos y bebidas

Nikko is one of the day trips from Tokyo that you have to do when you have enough time in your travel itinerary. A small traditional Japanese town, it brings together nature and some of Japan's most beautiful temples for an unforgettable day. Once at your destination, you can visit the Toshugu Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its National Park with trees typical of the region that change their appearance depending on the time of year.

The city of Hakone is a favorite among Japanese and foreigners, as well as the Fuji Five Lakes area, famous for its views in the middle of nature. In addition to seeing Mount Fuji, visiting Hakone gives you the chance to discover such interesting areas as the Hakone Open Air Museum - the secret Japan that not everyone knows about!

Located in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the 'Japanese Alps', it is a city of rural Japan that preserves its traditional old town, with wooden houses and businesses that have maintained their essence since the Edo period. From Tokyo Central Station it takes about 4 hours by train to Takayama. Although the trip is long, it is well worth getting up early, and enjoy the scenery where the train moves through the Japanese mountains. To get there you have to take the train to Nagoya, and make a change by taking the Limited Wide View Hida, included in the JR Pass. Once in town, walk a few meters from the station across the red Nakabashi bridge to the old town of Sanmachi Suji. Visit the traditional family houses that today serve as a museum, and pick up some of the most beautiful handcrafted souvenirs.

After 6 days touring Tokyo and its surroundings, we took a Shinkansen bullet train to another of the most touristic cities in Japan: Kyoto. Don't miss the ways to go from Tokyo to Kyoto with JR Pass

Take a pleasant walk up the streets of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka to enjoy its tourist atmosphere and traditional-looking houses and stores. During the walk you can visit the Yasaka Jinja shrine, and have a bite to eat in the area

Descending from the shrine of Yasaka Jinja we reach the Geisha quarter of Kyoto, Gion. At dusk, these mysterious women begin to take to the streets, dressed in their beautiful colorful kimonos on their way to the izakayas to entertain their customers. On the streets of Shijo and Kawarama, just outside the Gion district, there are many souvenir stores for tourists, selling typical sweets and handicrafts of all kinds that you can take home as souvenirs. Do not go to sleep without first passing through the river area and the traditional neighborhood of Pontocho. Here you will find some of the most visited places by the Geisha, and it may be the perfect place to cross paths with one of them

This tourist attraction usually has many visitors, but if you are one of the first to go, you will have the opportunity to see it almost empty to take your best photos. Known for its Golden Pavilion, the Kinkakuji temple is a must-see on any trip to Japan. You can also visit the Silver Pavilion Ginkaku-ji.

On the outskirts of the city, very close to the location of Kinkaku-ji, is the small village of Arashiyama. Perfect to dedicate a full day or to visit it during the whole afternoon, around its main street you will find many incredible tourist attractions.

Very close to the city of Kyoto is the ancient Japanese capital, Nara, famous for its deer-filled park and Todaiji Temple. Dedicate a full day to relax by strolling through the gardens and parks of this area, also taking the opportunity to see the old part of the city. Without many beautiful places to visit here! One of our favorites was the traditional Koshi-no-le house, which represents the typical housing style of the area.

Combined with the visit to Nara, a stop at Fushimi Inari shrine, with its endless corridor of red torii, is a must. The train connecting Nara and Kyoto stops at the station closest to the shrine, also included in the JR Pass.

Btw! On 6 August, Hiroshima marks the US's 1945 nuclear attack with a dove release, minute's silence, speeches and lantern ceremony. Start the morning at Senso-ji temple, one of the largest and most visited temples in the city. To continue immersing yourself in Japanese culture, go to Ueno Park in the Ueno neighborhood. We ended the day in another of Tokyo's must-see places, Odaiba Bay, with its artificial beach, impressive sculptures (like Tokyo's Statue of Liberty), shopping malls and huge outlets
